📍City of Pullman

UI /UX | Website Redesign

In this project, the City of Pullman reach joined forces with Washington State University’s UX team to create a proposition for the city’s website re-design. I focused on the Parks and Recreation page specifically. The timeline of this project highlighted key steps in the UX design process, to ensure that data was tracked and collected from the old site, in order to make informed recommendations for the new site.

Problem

The City of Pullman website has low user engagement levels, resulting in citizens struggling to find important information, volunteer, and stay updated with city news. This is caused by information being cluttered and disorganized, causing frustration in users. The website additionally poses accessibility concerns, making it not accessible. Additionally, the information on the website is not entirely up to date so civilians don’t have access to accurate information.

Solution

The redesign focuses on arranging and organizing the information on the Parks and Recreation page in a way that optimizes user engagement through creating a seamless experience. The organization was based on a number of usability tests, including card sorting, A/B testing, and a survey. The page’s information was updated and is supplying routine updates, ensuring civilians are getting accurate news and information. Accessibility concerns are acknowledged through color choices that have been updated, text-to-speech features, along with alternative text on images and links.

👤Understanding the user

In order to gain a deeper understanding of the existing user patterns, a survey was sent out to the city of Pullman via the city’s social media accounts, and 33 responses were recorded. The questions types ranged from short answer, to ranking importance and multiple choice. Through having this variety, identifying user patterns was more accurate and sensible. The questions primarily addressed common issues and preferences.

👩🏼‍🦰User-centered Questions

Why does the average user log into the City of Pullman website?

Identifying the initial goal of the user will shape the way that the rest of the questions are used and analyzed because the research will be user-centered. 71% of responses stated that users log into the cite to view bus schedules and routes. How can this information be used to shape the design of the cite in order to make this task as seamless as possible?

How intuitive is it to complete the above goal?
